History
Beaverbrook STEP is a private, non-profit, Massachusetts SDO Certified Women’s Non-Profit Organization (WNPO), IRS 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. STEP has been successfully providing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the housing services, clinical supports, health care, employment and social activities they need to fully participate in community life for over 50 years.

Governed by an active, all volunteer, community Board of Directors, Beaverbrook STEP is both a pioneer and leader in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.  In the early 1970’s, STEP opened one of the first Community Residential Programs in MA for individuals leaving Fernald State School under a landmark court ordered Consent Decree that heralded in a new era of community based services.
Shortly thereafter, STEP expanded the number of residential programs and also began an Individual Supports Program providing support services to individuals with disabilities who wanted to live in their own apartments in the community. Initially services focused on the communities of Watertown, Waltham and Belmont, but soon expanded to Brighton, Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Walpole, Arlington, Newton, Brookline and other eastern Massachusetts communities.

Beaverbrook STEP has nearly 30 years of experience operating our highly regarded Options Day Services program that provides comprehensive Community Based Day Services and Employment Training for 125 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities including adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), neurological/brain injuries, physical disabilities, as well as medical, mental health and behavioral diagnoses.  Primarily funded by the MA Department of Developmental Services, MA Rehabilitation Commission, MA Commission for the Blind and private fees, Options provides a unique blend of community activities and employment training services that are individually tailored to meet the needs of each person served.

The Options program curriculum has 5 major focus areas:  Vocational, Volunteer, Social, Recreation and Education.  Each participant’s schedule is structured to meet his/her personal goals, life vision and support needs.  Currently, there are 5 program sites located in retail business areas in Watertown and Belmont.
Today, STEP is a $24 Million organization that provides a comprehensive array of programs, supports and services to nearly 275 adults with disabilities and their family members. Throughout its history, Beaverbrook STEP has consistently achieved the highest level of licensing and accreditation from the Mass.
